The goal of the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is to provide education, tools, and support for people exploring their Addiction recovery journey. The IOP utilizes an Addiction is Addiction model so people will learn about what Addiction is and how it impacts many different areas of their lives, including substances, behaviours, relationships, feelings, and thinking.
This program is intended for adults at any phase of their recovery with Addiction, Mental Health and/or Chronic Pain. Those who are new to recovery appreciate the IOP’s education as it helps them lay the foundation for their recovery program. Those who have been in recovery for a number of years appreciate the reminders and also hearing information that is new to them. Most clients mention the daily group therapy as being a highlight of the program as it allows feedback, processing, and support with like minded individuals.
The intensive outpatient program (IOP) at HUM is an 18-day program (144 hours) spread out over 3 months and includes 3 phases. It is designed for people who have already completed the comprehensive assessment at HUM and are looking for intensive treatment for Addiction in a short-term, day treatment/outpatient format so that an individual does not have to be away from home/work for an extended period of time. As Addiction is a chronic disease, and Chronic Pain and Mental Health problems last a long time, the IOP is designed to be part of continuing care and recovery rather than a stand alone program. The IOP runs 4-5 times/year with a set start and end date.
An individual must first complete HUM’s comprehensive assessment in order to determine eligibility for the intensive outpatient program. Anyone age 18 and older can refer themselves to the HUM IOP. The IOP is suitable for anyone with Addiction, Mental Health and/or Chronic Pain and provides treatment for all substance dependence (alcohol, cannabis, other drugs including prescription medication), as well as problem behaviors (gambling, sex, food, relationships, video games, shopping, internet, etc.), in addition to addressing mental health and chronic pain issues.
