In this message we continue to explore the ABCDE characteristics of Addiction that come from the American Society of Addiction Medicine definition of Addiction. This week we focus on the last characteristic, the ‘E’ which is a dysfunctional emotional response. The others are:
A-inability to consistently abstain
B-impairment in behavioural control
C-cravings
D-diminished recognition of problems in relationships and behaviour
The ‘ABC’ are most active when people are engaged with substances and problem behaviours. The ‘D and E’ are the lifelong characteristics of the disease of Addiction. They are also the parts of the disease less known or understood by the public.
